The FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology) Robotics Competition is a unique sport where high school students compete like crazy to solve a real-world engineering problem. Every year a different “game” is released that the robots have to play. From the point when this animation is released, all teams have six weeks to design, build, and test a working robot. The Elkhart Area Career Center has a new program that was started in the fall of 2009, Electronics and Robotics. It is more of a pre-engineering class, but this is one of the first projects done for the 2009-2010 Afternoon class, A hovercraft. It utilizes an electric leaf blower and two fans to propel it forward. I am taking the video footage the guy riding the hovercraft is Ronny Glick.

This brief video shows the two basic changes to Anthony’s control algorithm. When objects are present (Left, Left Mid, Right, and Right Mid sensors), the turning radius is now proportional to the distance from the object. A new method for deciding optimal direction was also added. Instead of arbitrary path plotting, based upon the outputs of all sensors, the path of least resistance is selected. Variable speed control is still being tested. As readings indicate objects becoming closer rather than further away, speed will be reduced to eliminate a lack of response time.
